Wallflower On Campus: 30 Day College Challenge:... →
Reblogging wallfloweroncampus (Jasmine): Day 1: Which college was your number one choice? Are you going to that school? If not, how did you handle the rejection? If so, is it everything you always thought it would be? This is a screenshot of the information of one of my photo albums on Facebook. I first visited Marquette University over a year ago, and I loved it. I declared it my number...

When I was a freshman at Marquette
It was 1988. My roommate, Christian Kindig, and I bought pie-shaped carpeting for McCormick Hall, Room 831. Christian is on the left and I’m on the right in the photo. I had hair back then. Full-year tuition at Marquette University for 1988-89 ranged from $6,950 to $7,490. (Harvard’s tuition was $12,015.) McCormick was an all-male dorm in 1988. My RA was Gene Moran. Father John...

I stole the name postmarq. Again.
This blog’s name, postmarq, is 100% recycled. I encountered Postmarq in 1992 as part of my first job, writing stories for Marquette University. Postmarq was the name of the letters to the editor section in Marquette Magazine, the university quarterly. The section name eventually switched to “Letters to the Editor.”  Still, Postmarq stuck with me, even after I transferred to...

"I'll take Jesuit Universities for $800, Alex."
Season 28 of the quiz show Jeopardy! begins on Sept. 19, 2011. Over the years, host Alex Trebek has given several clues with “What is Marquette University?” as the correct response. A contestant answered this clue correctly for $800 during Double Jeopardy! on May 7, 2008. Worth $1200, this clue appeared in the COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES category on November 22, 2002. ...

Wallflower On Campus: Third Shift →
Reblogging wallfloweroncampus: …Third Shift is a drink at Brew Bayou, Marquette’s on-campus coffee chain. The ingredients are three shots of espresso, milk, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and whipped cream. It comes hot or iced, but as of yet I’ve gotten it iced because of the weather…. Third Shift = 6 hours of sleep

Remembering 9/11
In memory of the victims of 9/11, members of Marquette University’s ROTC lowered the American flag to half staff. The military ceremony took place on Sept. 9, 2011 at the campus flagpoles outside the Raynor Memorial Libraries. This video briefly depicts the end of the ceremony.

Hard hat required: Engineering Hall's new...
Check out the Engineering Materials and Structures Testing (EMST) Laboratory. This two-story lab lets engineering students build structures and devices, working with traditional and new materials. Think Mythbusters, Marquette engineering style. The yellow crane along the ceiling lifts up to 10 tons of material.

Al McGuire quotes from A to Z
Today would have been the 83rd birthday of legendary @MarquetteU coach Al McGuire (1928-2001). Enjoy the wit and wisdom of McGuire, who led the men’s basketball team to the 1977 NCAA championship and the 1970 NIT title. I compiled this list in 2006 for the MU Connect online alumni community. That quotes page is no longer online, so I’ve recreated it here, pairing the text with a...

Follow Marquette University history on foursquare
Marquette University does not offer a course this semester on the history of Milwaukee’s great Jesuit university. If Marquette did, I’d call it HIST 1881. We’d meet briefly on Wednesdays after the Marquette Hall carillon plays. Otherwise, class would held on foursquare, tracking Marquette University history using campus venues. Think of this foursquare list of university history...

Sept. 4, 1964: The Beatles slept here (today's...
The Fab Four visited Milwaukee 47 years ago today and stayed at the Coach House Motor Inn (now Mashuda Residence Hall at Marquette Hall). The Beatles held a press conference there and supposedly stayed somewhere on the seventh floor. After the concert downtown, fans remained overnight to see a glimpse of John, Paul, George or Ringo. As soon as the Beatles entourage checked out, fans rushed the...
